I often refer to it as Shadow Warrior 2013. In September, 2013, a reboot titled Shadow Warrior was released for PC. While it has some issues, it’s a fun and humorous title and as of this review, it can be acquired for free on Steam and GoG. Shadow Warrior in particular put you in the shoes of Lo Wang, a former bodyguard of Zilla Enterprises who sets out to avenge the death of his old mentor and prevent his former employer from conquering Japan using creatures from the dark side. Kinda easy and short but those are not things I hold against a game in most instances. The original Shadow Warrior is one of the big three Build engine games which were known for their humor, pop culture references, interactive environments, and fun sprite-based action. I mean it's because I want something totally different from that, and SW3 certainly is that. And well, it's well established how little I think of games like Half Life. I mean, okay, I was impressed by the sheer amount of world building and detail in Hedon say, and it's cool that it's there, it's just not why I'm playing. I just don't care because I don't see why anyone would play this sort of game for the story, it's a shlocky action shooter. I am gonna say you will not like the story here because it's also incoherent with the previous games and the writing is obnoxious. It does go a different direction but it really isn't one that's incompatible with the Shadow Warrior brand itself. and well, as I've found out it's not bug free but very few games I've played lately haven't given me issues, but it shows some improvement in their execution of mechanics. The first one was really nice at the time because there wasn't much else like it around, but it's not aged well, it's very rough. They made every decision as wrong as they could, that's 2 to me. Or maybe that's too strong, it's more like I played it for an hour and I stopped because I liked precisely nothing about it. Reading about how the game is trying to imitate Doom Eternal also gets me worried, as I am not particularly fond of the latter to begin with and I know Flying Wild Hog is nowhere near as talented as Id Software.ĭo we know if they got Stan Bush back, at least? The soundtrack was definitely the best part of the first two games. However, Shadow Warrior 2's story was nowhere near as enjoyable as its predecessor and it was disappointing to see Lo Wang back to being an immature prick his interactions with Kamiko, which were clearly meant to be reminiscent of his relationship with Hoji, were oftentimes deeply unpleasant to listen to: I do not know if it is because Kamiko is a woman or if there is just no chemistry between the two characters, but their exchanges felt so needlessly antagonistic and mean-spirited to me most of the time.Īs such, I am not really sure about Shadow Warrior 3. While Shadow Warrior 2's gameplay felt to me like a considerable improvement over its predecessor (which, let's face it, was essentially Hard Reset with a katana, so much so that Flying Wild Hog then proceeded to do just that and literally shoehorn a katana into Hard Reset: Redux), I really did not like the the looter-shooter aspect, the half-baked level randomization and the constant backtracking, so I am glad that those were removed in Shadow Warrior 3. So far I think it's well made and justifiable for the price it is, and it is the best of their FPS titles, it's the smoothest and most fluid by far and that's how you win for me. I guess that it's a different game from 1 and 2 as well? I was looking for it to be anything other than like 2 personally.įlying Wild Hog kinda did the insane thing and asked themselves "how can we make an optimised FPS that can compete with Doom Eternal on a fraction of the budget I have to imagine", and so they decided to make something technically well optimised and fun to play, sacrificing scale I guess, it still looks like it took a lot of development. Eh, people are mainly fixated on the voice actor change (questionable motivation behind it but the actual acting quality is about the same, it's the writing that is not great, maybe a bit below the other games but I wouldn't exactly put them on a pedestal), the fact its kinda blatant in its borrowing from Doom Eternal (fine by me, Doom Eternal salvaged AAA shooters, and I thought Doom 2016 was kinda dull) and the fact it's short (which often gets the most complaining and I will never get why, they aren't even charging full price).
